Conor McGregor became the first to hold two UFC titles simultaneously, winning belts in the featherweight and lightweight divisions. His success inspired many MMA fighters to follow in his footsteps, including Ilia Topuria, who now aspires to become a double-division champion. However, UFC president Dana White has mixed feelings about Topuria’s ambitions.

Topuria is set to defend his title against Max Holloway at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi, marking his first title defense as “El Matador.” Despite this, Topuria has made it clear that he’s aiming to become a double champ and has challenged Islam Makhachev to defend his lightweight title against him. However, in an interview with TMZ Sports, UFC president Dana White voiced his disapproval of the featherweight champion’s plans to challenge Makhachev, saying,

“Before we start talking about guys moving up to other weight classes, I mean, look at Max Holloway. When he moved up, he had wiped out the entire division [and proved to be] the best 145-pounder, and then Volkanovski. So there’s plenty of challenges for him at 145.”

The Georgian fighter claimed the featherweight title by defeating Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298, and since then, he’s been setting his sights on a second belt. Topuria has also taken jabs at other UFC stars, including welterweight champion Belal Muhammad. While the future remains uncertain for Topuria, he has stated that after facing Holloway, he does not plan to defend his title against Volkanovski in Australia.

Ilia Topuria Declines Volkanovski Rematch in Australia

Volkanovski recently announced his return at UFC 312, making it clear that he wants a title or interim title shot, with a strong interest in a rematch against Ilia Topuria. However, Topuria, who will face Max Holloway at UFC 308, has refused to defend his title against Volkanovski in Australia. Although Volkanovski remains intent on competing at UFC 312, Topuria stated at UFC 308’s media day,

“That’s never going to happen. I’m the champion and, if you want to fight for the title again, it has to be in Madrid instead of fighting in Australia in front of your people. Why would I want to give you that advantage?”

While Alexander Volkanovski aims to reclaim the title, his opponent for “The Great” has yet to be confirmed. However, fans can look forward to exciting matchups in 2025, with an official announcement regarding Volkanovski’s fight expected after UFC 308.
