There’s a popular saying, “Fake it till you make it,” and many athletes, including Conor McGregor, have embraced this mindset to build confidence and success. However, Joe Rogan, the well-known podcaster and UFC commentator, sees things differently when it comes to martial arts. He often talks about the sport’s intense discipline, emphasizing that it demands complete focus and dedication. In his view, there’s no room for illusions or self-deception—fighters can’t fake their skills or speed.

In a lot of things, people can fake their way to success, but not in martial arts. The second a fight starts, any weakness is obvious, and there’s no way to hide it. That’s why fighters have to keep training and improving—because they’re facing opponents who are just as skilled and determined. In the world of martial arts, being the best isn’t just a goal; it’s the only way to win.

Taking to Chris Williamson, Rogan said, “Martial arts demands that kind of focus. You can not pretend. There is no pretending you’re good, you have to be good. There is no pretending you’re fast, you have to be fast. You have to be perfect because you’re fighting against other trained killers.”

Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth,” emphasizing that reality hits hard—literally. If someone is just faking their skills, that façade crumbles the moment they step into a real fight. Indeed, the only thing that matters is actual skill, preparation, and the ability to perform under pressure.

Rogan sees Jiu-Jitsu as an ideal martial art for women to learn for self-defense. He explains that unlike striking-based fighting styles, which depend on strength and size, Jiu-Jitsu focuses on leverage and technique. This gives smaller individuals a realistic chance to defend themselves against bigger, stronger attackers. He emphasizes that knocking out a man with punches or kicks is extremely difficult, but Jiu-Jitsu offers a practical way to control and neutralize threats without relying on raw power.

Indeed, this is why Rogan is highly regarded for his deep MMA knowledge. His insights come not just from years of commentary but from his own experience in martial arts, including black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo. His understanding of technique, strategy, and the realities of combat has made him one of the most respected voices in the sport.
