Aaron Nola didn’t sugarcoat anything. The Philadelphia Phillies ace took the mound Wednesday night in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Cardinals and got absolutely rocked.

Nola gave up a career-worst 12 hits and nine earned runs in just 3.2 innings, including three home runs. The Phillies were hammered 14-7, snapping their long streak of series wins. Afterward, Nola was the first to admit just how bad it was.

“I don’t really have another answer for tonight besides: terrible,” he told reporters per NBC. “I didn’t do my job well at all.”

Nola’s numbers this season are officially ugly. He’s now 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA and has already given up 11 home runs in just nine starts. He’s on pace to beat his own record of 32 homers allowed from 2023—and not in a good way.

Just a few weeks ago, Nola was showing signs of life, putting up a solid 3.33 ERA over a four-start stretch. But the wheels are falling off fast. In his last three outings, he has 13 earned runs and shaky command.

Even manager Rob Thomson didn’t hold back, stating, “He had a lot of first-pitch strikes but just couldn’t put people away. There were just a lot of mistakes, especially with two strikes on the hitters.”

Right now, the Phillies are leaning on Zack Wheeler and Jesus Luzardo to carry the load, but Nola’s ongoing slump is becoming a serious concern for a team with October ambitions.

Next up for Aaron Nola? A likely start against the Rockies, a chance to rebound against a weaker lineup. But make no mistake, the pressure is building, and Philly fans are watching.

If this were a one-off, you shake it off. But for Aaron Nola, this looks like a trend, and it’s one the Phillies can’t afford to let continue.
