Rory McIlroy has had a run of bad decisions lately, and he continued that streak once again.

The recent Masters champ is not playing in the Memorial this week, and he made things worse by not letting Jack Nicklaus—who founded the tournament and is the face of the event—know that he would be skipping it.

Nicklaus revealed this week that he was surprised McIlroy was not in the field for the first time since 2017 and that he hasn’t spoken to him since McIlroy won the green jacket to complete the career Grand Slam.

“I was sort of aware of it about the middle of last week,” Jack Nicklaus said.

” Yeah, it surprised me, but you know, guys have got schedules and got things they do. And I haven’t talked to him for him to tell me why or why not. That’s just his call.”

Nicklaus understands what Rory McIlroy is going through as he tries to decide which tournaments he wants to play.

However, he admitted that he is disappointed McIlroy won’t be in Dublin, Ohio, for the event this week.

“I made a lot of calls that I had to make when I played, to play or not play, and sometimes it wasn’t as popular as people thought it was,” Nicklaus said.

“But you know, sometimes you have to make those calls.”

“I don’t hold anything against Rory for that. He did what he likes to play,” Nicklaus said. “I know he likes to play so many in a row. He likes to play the week before the US Open. So that’s what he’s doing.

“So I really don’t have a comment on it. It’s very difficult. I’m a big Rory fan, I always have been. And I’m sure I’ll remain that way.”

Jack Nicklaus, who founded the Memorial Tournament in 1976, revealed that McIlroy didn’t give him a heads-up about skipping this year’s event.

Fans were not happy.

“My lord, it’s not like Rory doesn’t have an extra phone he picked up along the way he could have used,” one fan said.

“Looks Like I picked the right golfer to despise,” a second fan stated.

“I feel like it is abundantly obvious something is going on in Rory’s personal life right now,” a third fan added of Rory McIlroy.

“Jack is a class act. Rory, not so much,” one final fan wrote.
