Sophie Cunningham Reveals Problematic Divide In The Indiana Fever Locker Room As She Takes The Blame

Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever are not having the type of 2025 season they had hoped for.
A brutal fourth quarter led to a tough loss for the Indiana Fever against the LA Sparks on Thursday night.
Caitlin Clark missed her sixth game of the season, this time with a groin strain, and the Indiana Fever could have used her against a team that was on a losing streak.
The Fever led for most of the game but went cold in the fourth quarter. The Sparks grabbed control and pulled away for an 85-75 win. The Sparks outscored the Fever 35-17 in the fourth quarter.
Sophie Cunningham scored 10 points for the Indiana Fever in a 75-85 loss. The game, which saw the Fever lose despite leading in the fourth quarter, highlighted some recurring issues for the team, including their struggles to close out games.
Cunningham also had two rebounds and four steals.
With the loss, the team has dropped below .500 yet again, with a 7-8 record. That’s not what fans expected to see from Indiana in Year 2 of the Caitlin Clark era.
“The good news is we’re not gonna peak too early, so I mean, that’s a positive,” Cunningham told reporters.
“It’s not an excuse. Everyone’s playing a back-to-back, everyone has this kind of rough schedule. For us, it’s another opportunity tomorrow, and we’ve got to capitalize on it.”
Sophie Cunningham also made quite the eyebrow-raising remark about the Fever’s dynamic behind the scenes.
Cunningham admitted players have their “own islands” within the locker room.
“We are circled on everybody’s schedule. No one likes us, right? So everyone in our locker room, that’s the only type of people that we have that we can lean on. We have got to stay disciplined, we have to stay focused, we need to get consistent, and we got to lean on each other. And I think we’ve kind of wavered on that. We have our own islands. As one of the leaders of the team, I got to do a better job of grouping people.”

Cunningham is correct. The Indiana Fever are not the defending champs, but they are the most talked about team due to having Caitlin Clark.
That is more than enough for every team to want to play their best game against them and take them down.
What’s Next For Sophie Cunningham And The Indiana Fever?

A fourth-quarter fallout has become a recent and unfortunate trend for the Indiana Fever.
The Fever held double-digit second-half leads in three of their past four games. Yet, they still possess a record that is under .500.
Missing Clark, specifically, changes the game exponentially. Players like Sophie Cunningham can only do much when you are missing firepower like that.
It’s a completely different game when Clark is out. But it’s something the Fever will need to learn to work around.
Next up for the Fever is a Friday matchup with Paige Bueckers and the Wings.
