Malik Beasley’s legal complications continue to grow. While federal prosecutors no longer consider the veteran guard a target in their sports betting investigation, he is still under active review and could face charges, as per ESPN. With NBA training camps set to open in a month, Beasley’s future on the court remains uncertain.

The Eastern District of New York focuses on several 2023-24 games during Beasley’s time with the Milwaukee Bucks, during which unusual prop bet activity triggered red flags at a major U.S. sportsbook. Though the target label remained clear, Malik Beasley remains a subject, meaning his conduct is still part of the grand jury investigation.

Amid the growing tension, Beasley’s potential landing spot took center stage in the headlines, but things will seem to make further actions as the situation takes another turn. The Justice Department now believes it lacks substantial evidence to charge him, but everything is unclear.

Beasley’s lawyer, Steve Haney, told The Detroit News that the situation is stressful.  “That is the frustrating thing. You live in a state of purgatory with a cloud hanging over your head for what? Forever? And you’re out of the league and can never play basketball again? Hopefully, this gives some new hope to his situation of being gainfully employed in the new year,” Haney said.

Malik Beasley had a strong season and was close to signing a three-year, $42 million deal with the Pistons. But when the investigation started, all the contract conversations stopped. The Pistons moved on and signed other similar players.

Off the court, Beasley faces financial issues. His former apartment complex is suing him for over $2 million, and he was recently evicted for not paying rent. His lawyer says Beasley was not broke but had poor management.

The Pistons could still re-sign him, but other teams also have room to offer him more. Even if he signs, Malik Beasley may still face NBA discipline, as the league conducts its own review independent of the federal probe.
