The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs will square off in Game 1 of the NLDS in a battle of division rivals. Milwaukee comes in as the top seed in the National League after finishing with the best record, while the Cubs arrive full of confidence after surviving the Wild Card Game 3 round, courtesy of a controversial umpiring call against the Padres.

Notably, this will be the first time the Brewers and Cubs meet in the postseason. The rivalry already runs deep from regular-season matchups, but it’s going to go to another level in the postseason. Milwaukee holds home-field advantage, which could be crucial in what is likely to be a tight series on paper.

The Brewers will turn to Freddy Peralta in Game 1. Peralta has been one of their most reliable starters all year, posting a 17-6 record with a 2.70 ERA and over 200 strikeouts. At home, he has been even better, going 9-1 with an ERA under 2. His ability to work deep into games will be key against a Cubs lineup that thrives on wearing pitchers down. The bullpen, which carried the Cubs past the Padres, will again play a huge role in trying to slow down Milwaukee’s bats.

The Cubs have not yet confirmed their starter, but they could go with either Colin Rea or Javier Assad. Rea finished the season with an 11-7 record and a 3.95 ERA, and he has been especially sharp lately, giving up only one walk over his last 23 innings. Assad also impressed in his outings, with a 4-1 record and a 3.65 ERA.

Talking about offense, Christian Yelich and William Contreras will be the leading players at the plate. Yelich is batting .264 this season with a team-high 29 home runs, while Contreras has a slugging percentage of .399 this season.

For the Cubs, Pete Crow-Armstrong will not just be key at the plate but also in defense. Kyle Tucker, who is set to hit free agency after the conclusion of this season, will also be a player to watch with the lumber.
