A new twist has emerged in Mark Sanchez’s case following his arrest in Indianapolis over the weekend.

The former NFL quarterback, now a color commentator for FOX Sports, was stabbed in the chest early Saturday morning but is thought to have been the aggressor in the altercation which it stemmed from.

He was initially charged with three misdemeanors but is now facing a felony charge of battery involving serious bodily harm, according to ABC News.

The outlet cites local prosecutors, who added the charge after investigators learned the severity of the victim’s injuries.

Sanchez was hospitalized and required surgery, but he was placed under arrest while in medical care and booked immediately after being discharged

“This was a situation that did not need to occur,” Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears told a news conference on Monday.

“The allegations involve a 38-year-old man becoming involved in an altercation with a 69-year-old man who sustained significant and very serious injuries.”

Mears said that the dispute between the two men resulted from a parking issue, adding that there could be further charges with authorities still in “the early stages of this investigation.”

According to prosecutors, Sanchez allegedly approached a 69-year-old truck driver at a hotel loading dock and climbed into his truck after they got into an argument, preventing him from calling for help.

The driver tried to fend Sanchez off with pepper spray and eventually stabbed him. However, he suffered injuries himself.

“After the altercation turned physical, it is alleged that pepper spray was dispensed, and Sanchez suffered injuries consistent with being stabbed,” they noted.

Sanchez was arrested at the hospital and initially charged with three misdemeanors, including battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication.

He posted a $300 cash bond on Sunday and is due to appear in court on Tuesday. The case is now set to be transferred to a major felony court.

The felony charge carries a penalty of 1-6 years in prison upon a guilty conviction, according to Mears.
