Mike Norvell on Thin Ice as Career-Threatening Warning Looms at Florida State
Mike Norvell joined Florida State as head coach in December 2019, and since then his tenure has seen plenty of ups and downs. During the 2022 season, the Seminoles carried national championship expectations, yet they fell short of securing a College Football Playoff berth.
Jordan Travis’s injury proved to be a turning point, as the committee removed the team from the playoff picture and gave Alabama its spot. The quarterback position has always been a major concern for both Mike Norvell and Florida State.
While Norvell has consistently landed talented quarterbacks, those same quarterbacks have also created long-term issues for the program. Now, even Thomas Castellanos has decided to enter the draft. As a result, Norvell is once again back to square one.
He has to restart the process all over again, and the situation is even more troubling this time. If Florida State fails to secure a quality quarterback, their season could be over before it even begins.
And if that happens again, Florida State’s failure may no longer protect Mike Norvell’s job, especially given the number of chances he has already received.
Is 2026 season a make-or-break moment for Mike Norvell at Florida State
If we remove the 2022 season from the equation, Mike Norvell has little to point to in defending himself as a powerful head coach. Norvell himself understands this reality—Florida State has given him plenty of chances, and this one could very well be his last.
That makes it extremely important for the Seminoles’ head coach to prove his value and show clear improvement by the 2026 season. As we saw this year, several coaches were fired in the middle of the season, and a similar situation could unfold in 2026 as well.
If Mike Norvell fails to deliver a strong start, there’s a real possibility that he could lose his job midseason. Of course, only time will tell whether Norvell is able to bring meaningful changes to the Seminoles or ends up falling short once again.
It also remains to be seen whether Florida State would continue to stand by him even in the event of failure.
