The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season continues to head in the wrong direction, and the tension around the team is hard to ignore. The mood inside the locker room has also raised questions, with many wondering whether head coach Craig Berube still has full control of the group. As the losses continue, there is growing talk about whether players are fully buying into his playing style.

What has made things worse is the Maple Leafs’ recent losing streak. Too often, the team has shown little fight back, and players’ lack of motivation and passion have been visible on the ice, which the coach also called out.

That frustration came to a head on Monday when the Maple Leafs fired assistant coach Marc Savard following a 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars.

With the season continuing to unravel, many believe Berube could be next if things do not turn around soon.

NHL insider Chris Johnston addressed the situation while speaking on OverDrive, offering a blunt assessment of what could be coming for Berube and the rest of the management if the season continues to go in a downward direction.

“More changes, I would suggest,” Johnston said. “I don’t get any feeling that the Leafs are ready to turn the page on this season. I think they still want to find solutions. You know, if things don’t change, if they keep losing every game, there will be some other changes.”

Johnston also discussed Berube’s future with the team amid the team’s poor run this season.

“The first step is to get some better results, and if not, then there’s either going to be players out the door or management people out the door or coach out the door,” the NHL insider added.

Meanwhile, another veteran NHL insider, Elliotte Friedman, has reported that Berube and GM Brad Treliving, who has been under a lot of criticism from fans lately, are not on the firing line.

“[Marc] Savard and Berube are close, and the head coach fought in support of his assistant as the man-advantage struggles mounted. But that’s where the changes stop for now, with Treliving and Berube not in similar danger,” Friedman wrote on Sportsnet.

For now, the focus remains on results. The Maple Leafs face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday before the Christmas break and then travel to Ottawa on December 27 to play the Senators.
