Norman Powell Was “Shocked” After Clippers Suddenly Traded Him Despite Extension Talks
Norman Powell thought he had clarity. Exit meetings done. Extension conversations floating. A sense that Los Angeles wanted him around for the long haul, and then the floor disappeared. In the NBA, loyalty is fragile, and Powell learned that the hard way. Even Erik Spoelstra wasted no time delivering a blunt reality check, sending him a not-so-subtle wake-up call about his conditioning.
Coming off the best season of his career, Powell had earned stability. He was productive. Durable. Trusted. Everything a contender needs from a veteran scorer. Which is why what followed felt less like a business decision and more like a blindside. One phone call. No warning. No bridge between words and actions.
Norman Powell, who averaged 21.8 points while starting all 60 games in 2024-25, said the messaging didn’t match the move. On December 17, reports revealed that the 32-year-old was shocked when he learnt that the Clippers were gonna trade him.
“They were just saying that they want to give me an extension. And then from there to being traded, you know, it’s like—you have to tell me that, right? Just keep it business. Don’t tell me you want me here, then you just automatically trade me for whatever.”

The shock became public in July 2025, when Powell addressed the situation during a press conference, as first reported by multiple league insiders. Despite prior extension discussions with the Clippers’ front office, he was dealt to the Miami Heat as part of a three-team trade that landed John Collins in Los Angeles and opened future cap flexibility.
Powell reportedly never received a formal extension offer, with the Clippers wary of a potential $30 million-per-year ask.
Norman Powell’s Grind Hits Home
Powell stays in motion. Gym early. Calls late. Buckets are piling up in Miami while something bigger moves quietly in the background. His grind doesn’t stop at the stat sheet.
Behind the scenes, he’s just as locked in. His Understand the Grind Foundation prioritizes families, especially those back home in San Diego.
That work was spotlighted by NBA.com on Dec. 12. While averaging a career-best 24.6 points for the Heat, Powell’s foundation delivered 500 turkeys and prepped its annual Christmas drive.
