The AL East arms race just found its next pressure point. And it’s not coming through free agency. It’s coming through Arizona, where one of the Diamondbacks’ most trusted veterans is at the center of a two-team tug-of-war. Boston is hunting impact talent. Tampa Bay is hunting for value and leverage. When those paths collide, the market moves fast. And Ketel Marte, whom the Giants are frantically pursuing, is now right in the crosshairs.

According to MLB insider Francys Romero on X, reported December 20, both the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are actively pushing to work out a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Marte. Talks aren’t close yet, but Romero’s wording signals intent, not curiosity. Marte’s been a stabilizing force next to Corbin Carroll, and losing him would reshape Arizona’s lineup and leadership core.

“Hearing that both the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays are actively pushing to reach a deal with Ketel Marte, per sources. Nothing close so far.”

Marte is signed through 2030, with a 2031 player option, and will earn $16 million in 2026, notably more than Carroll’s $10.6 million that season. That cost hasn’t scared contenders. What’s more, Monster Territory’s Robbie Hyde warned on X that losing Marte to Tampa, while the rest of the division loads up, would be a brutal optics hit for the Red Sox front office.

Rays’ Shane Baz Trade Opens Door for Aggressive Ketel Marte Push

The Rays reshuffled the roster to a T. And once Tampa starts stacking assets, trade smoke usually turns into fire. Friday changed the math because, well, Shane Baz is gone. Brandon Lowe, too. Now, Marte rumors are heating up.

According to ClutchPoints, reported December 20, an MLB insider believes a Ketel Marte trade is now more realistic. Jon Morosi of MLB Network noted Arizona is listening for pitching prospects, and Tampa now has more to offer. Add in the Baz return detailed by Jeff Passan, and Tampa’s positioning looks intentional.
