Chael Sonnen says it's best time to be UFC champion

There is no doubt that Chael Sonnen has one of the most interesting and sometimes outlandish takes when it comes to talking about the UFC. Once again, he did the same, as Sonnen went hard on fighters who compete only three times a year, saying he has zero respect for those who miss fights.

Sonnen specifically praised fighters who stay active in jiu-jitsu and wrestling between MMA bouts, showing continued commitment to martial arts rather than just collecting paychecks for occasional fights.

In his words, I can’t even tell you the lack of respect I have for a guy who misses a martial arts fight. If that’s what you do for a living and you’re asked to go to work three times a year, I could not possibly care how you feel on one of those three days. I don’t respect fellow fighters because they only work three times a year.”

His perspective comes from someone who always showed up. He fought frequently, took short-notice bouts, and competed across multiple organizations. That work ethic shapes his view on modern fighters who seem less willing to stay active. However, the take has MMA divided.

Some call it one of the stupidest opinions in history, pointing out that training camps, weight cuts, and recovery from damage aren’t reflected in fight frequency. Three fights a year mean year-round preparation and physical toll. Others view it as a reality check.

One fan told Sonnen to look into the mirror, saying, “Chael Sonnen made his pro debut in 1997 and retired in 2019. He has fought 3 or more times in a year in 2002-2007, 2009, and 2013. Someone needs to look in the mirror.”

Meanwhile, one fan said, “Chael spittin facts consistent grinders get my respect too.”

Another fan called Sonnen’s perspective weak, saying, “One the weakest takes from a man famous for saying stupid shit. Professional fighters work on their craft Constantly. I have nothing but respect for anyone who grinds as hard as these fighters do, often times for little to no money.”

One fan said, “Yess true.”

One fan’s comment read, “He just loves fighting, haha.”

On the other hand, one fan said, “lowkey gotta point but he was reaching with the broken arm comment.”

Modern MMA involves significantly more damage per fight than boxing has historically. The combination of strikes, grappling, and submissions creates accumulated trauma that requires longer recovery periods.

Sonnen’s lack of respect for fellow fighters, based purely on frequency, ignores these realities while making a point about the warrior mentality versus treating fighting as just a paycheck job.
