Sean McVay Snaps On Reporter In Heated Exchange After NFC Championship Loss To Seahawks [VIDEO]
Matthew Stafford didn’t indicate what’s next for him, but Sean McVay sure had something to say about it. The Los Angeles Rams head coach wasn’t happy talking about the possibility of Stafford playing the final game of his career.
McVay seemed annoyed when he was asked if he expected Stafford to return to the team for the 2026 season. In his postgame press conference, McVay was asked, “Do you expect Matthew Stafford to be back next season?” a reporter asked McVay.
Sean McVay was clearly not thrilled at the question, “I mean, if he still wants to play,” McVay answered, via Pro Football Talk. “What the hell kind of question is that?”
He would then go on to give the question a more substantive answer while mostly deferring to Matthew Stafford. “You have to ask him,” McVay said.
“We’ve been totally present. I know that if he wants to, he’s still playing at a pretty damn good clip. I mean, he’s the MVP of the league, and if he’s not — you know, I mean, I got respect for everybody else, but this guy played at a level that’s just different.”
It’s clear that Sean McVay isn’t entertaining the thought of a life without Matthew Stafford as his quarterback.
What’s Next For Matthew Stafford?
The Los Angeles Rams’ season ended on the doorstep of Super Bowl 60. They lost to NFC West rival Seattle, 31-27, in the NFC championship game on Sunday. It was the third and final meeting for the two teams.
This offseason will be nothing like last offseason for the Rams. Stafford, who was recovering from a herniated disc, found himself in the midst of trade rumors. Instead of being dealt, he ultimately decided to return to the Los Angeles Rams on a two-year contract.
Life without Stafford would be hard for the team going forward. They have experienced nothing but success together. Matthew Stafford and McVay won a Super Bowl with the Rams to cap the 2021 season – his first with the Rams.
He led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdown passes in 2025. This was the first time he surpassed 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes since the 2021 season. He also earned his third Pro Bowl nod.
Now, it will be a wait-and-see game on his decision for the 2026 season.
