In the high-stakes moments in the NBA, weight can be a game-changer. One of the prime examples is Shaquille O’Neal, who explained how size can dominate on the court. This was also evident in the recent moment featuring Zion Williamson and Austin Reaves during the Los Angeles Lakers-New Orleans Pelicans game.

At one point during the game, Reaves found himself defending against Williamson. Positioned near the three-point line, Reaves made a surprising choice: rather than contest Williamson’s drive to the basket, he allowed the easy layup. This unexpected decision raised eyebrows, and during the post-game press conference, Reaves candidly explained the reason.

Don’t be scared to get out of the way…I was terrified. There was no way in hell I was taking a charge. He was running too fast…I just kind of slid out the way, let him have a layup,” Reaves said.

Reaves weighs 197 lbs while Williamson weighs 284 lbs. It is certainly a clever move from Reaves to protect himself from potential injury while taking on a player who is 87 pounds heavier.

The Pelicans are already in a worse situation, but it was a crucial game for the Lakers. Reaves struggled offensively, scoring 15 points, recording three assists, and grabbing eight rebounds. However, Luka Doncic put forth a strong effort, scoring 27 points, dishing 7 assists, and grabbing 10 rebounds, leading the purple and gold to a 110-101 win. This victory marked the team’s third straight success.

After a rough patch leading to a four-game losing streak, the Lakers faced a crossroads that raised concerns about their season. But they’ve turned the tide and are now enjoying a three-game winning streak, reshaping their game plan to strengthen their performance.

In a strategic move, they’re set to adjust their lineup to get Austin Reaves more minutes alongside LeBron James, as noted by coach Redick. “Lineup alert: Lakers will tweak rotation to get Austin Reaves more minutes alongside LeBron James,” reported via Underdog NBA.

The big three of LeBron James, Reaves, and Doncic have often struggled to find their rhythm together this season, a concern highlighted by analysts like Stephen A. Smith and Kendrick Perkins. Interestingly, Reaves shone brightest during James’ recovery from sciatica, proving his capability when given the spotlight. Can these tweaks propel the Lakers to greater heights?
