Patrick continues to rehab from a knee injury that ended his 2025 season, with the hopes that he’ll be ready in time for Week 1. There have been no reported setbacks for Mahomes since the injury occurred in December.

Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn left ACL and LCL on December 14, 2025. The injury occurred in the final minutes of the fourth quarter when his knee buckled after being tackled from behind. It was the end of a tumultuous season for a team that missed the playoffs.

Patrick underwent surgery to repair the ligaments shortly after the injury, aiming for a return for the 2026 season.

This week, Brittany Mahomes shared a new look at Patrick Mahomes’ recovery during a family trip. She posted photos on Instagram from a Texas farm trip with Patrick and their three children. In the first picture, you can see Patrick holding his youngest daughter while on a wakeboard in the water. That picture also showed the gruesome scar on his left leg.

Other pictures showed the family spending time outdoors, including moments with animals and around a campfire.

“Go to a TX farm, invite all ya friends and fam🤍 the best weekend with our squad! 🙏🏼,” Brittany wrote in the caption.

Patrick Mahomes is targeting a return for the 2026 NFL season opener following December 2025 surgery for a torn ACL and LCL. His type of injury usually has a nine-month recovery timeline.

While he could be back by Week 1 in mid-September, the timeline is tight and could potentially be extended to October, as noted in reports from Yahoo Sports.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid spoke about Mahomes’ progress with NFL Media’s Judy Battista last month. “He’s doing great,” Reid told Battista, via NFL.com.

“He spends a ton of time in the building. … He’s in there for seven hours a day. It’s showing the progress. Now, to tell you a timeline? I mean, I know what he’s striving for. We’ll just see where it goes from there.”

That same month, footage showed the two-time MVP already back on the field and throwing footballs. Patrick Mahomes has been clear in his desire to return for the start of the 2026 season. Mahomes passed for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 62.7% completion rate over 14 games last year.
