Victor Wembanyama is being touted as the NBA’s next face. Unfortunately, despite having a stellar season, the 22-year-old suffered an injury scare during the San Antonio Spurs’ playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers. Naturally, with game 5 just a few hours away, the French star’s availability is being heavily discussed.

At the moment, it looks like the 2023 first overall pick will be available for the game. Suffering a concussion in the first half of his team’s 103-106 loss to Portland, San Antonio was pretty much rattled by the incident. Thankfully, after missing game 3, the 2026 Kia Defensive Player of the Year cleared the league’s concussion protocol.

Logging in for 34 minutes, Wembanyama dropped a solid 27-point performance to see his team take a 3-1 lead. As the Spurs aim to finish off the series in Game 5, the contribution from the 22-year-old will be of utmost importance. However, as a unit, San Antonio has looked pretty well-knit.

Ticking some crucial boxes, the team managed to win while trailing by 15 in the third quarter. And guess what? Mitch Johnson’s men did not have their 7-foot-4 icon to bail them out. Thus, with Wemby expected to suit up, the Spurs’ outfit should deliver yet another strong performance.

Can Victor Wembanyama Close Out The Series With His Stellar Play?

The 22-year-old has only played two full games against the Trail Blazers. His average? Well, it stands at an astounding 31 points, 4.5 blocks, 8.5 rebounds, and a couple of assists. And that’s not all. A look at the 2-time NBA All-Star’s shooting stats will further reveal his greatness on the hardwood. Wembanyama shot 57.9% from the field and 60% from the three-point line.

Showing a lot of faith in the 2024 Rookie of the Year, Johnson had stated, “I’ve learned to trust that young man. I’m rolling with him, and the challenge now is for him to continue to play the way he did in the second half (of Game 4 with 18 points, five rebounds, five blocks) for the whole game. When he does that, we’ll be tough.”

Now then, expected to carry his team in the playoffs, the 22-year-old phenom does have a steep slope to climb ahead.
