The Chicago Cubs are a major force in the National League this year. They have already recorded two 10-game winning streaks in the MLB thus far. They are certainly reaping the benefits of their spending in the free agent market during the offseason. Unfortunately, the Cubs have to leave some of their upcoming talents on the bench as a result.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Chicago Cubs will trade Matt Shaw at the deadline to address their shortcomings in the starting pitching department. The 24-year-old infielder was has a backup utilty role this year with the arrival of Alex Bregman in the offseason and Nico Hoerner signing a new contract.

“The Chicago Cubs, who are seeking a front-line starter at the trade deadline, may have no choice but to move infielder Matt Shaw, who’s blocked at third base by Alex Bregman and second base by Nico Hoerner,” Nightengale wrote.

Shaw was the first-round pick for the Cubs at the 2023 MLB Draft. He contributed 3.1 bWAR last season to finish in the top 10 for the NL Rookie of the Year and has a $804,500 salary for 2026.

Chicago Cubs Need To Trade Matt Shaw To Remain A Playoff Contender

Matt Shaw becomes an expendable asset for the Chicago Cubs due to the injuries in their starting rotation, as per Mike Powell of FanSided. He feels the Cubs have to move Shaw to fill the vacant spots and keep the team a postseason contender down the stretch.

“The Cubs rotation is down Justin Steele, Matthew Boyd, and Cade Horton for most of this season. If they intend to win the NL Central this season — and that’s easier said than done with the Brewers and Cardinals baring down on them — sending an MLB-ready player like Shaw out of town could be their best chance,” Powell wrote.

The Chicago Cubs lead the NL Central with a 29-18 record. However, with all five teams in the division currently over .500, there are just five games separating them from the bottom.
