Blake Snell was the marquee free agent addition to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ roster ahead of the 2025 season. But the two-time Cy Young winner spent the majority of the regular season on the sidelines due to injury. Nevertheless, Snell returned to the team a month before the playoffs, playing a vital role in the Dodgers retaining their World Series crown.

The Los Angeles Dodgers started the 2026 campaign with Blake Snell on the IL due to shoulder fatigue from his rigors in the previous campaign. The 32-year-old left-hander finally made his season debut last week after completing a rehab assignment. But the Dodgers moved Snell to the IL once again on Saturday, as he will undergo elbow surgery to remove loose bodies.

“It’s supposed to be a lot quicker recovery. So we’re encouraged about that,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told the media on Saturday. “We expect him, certainly, back this season. Don’t really know a timetable. But I think just kind of what we had—the MRI, the scans, everything. We feel good about getting back to play sooner than later.”

Snell made his season debut last Sunday against the Atlanta Braves, throwing 77 pitches over just 3.0 innings. The Dodgers felt the injury while playing during the midweek. He was scratched from his next start against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

Dave Roberts Discusses Dodgers’ Strategy Following Blake Snell’s Absence

Following his move back to the IL, Blake Snell joins the growing ranks of Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers who are currently on the sidelines with injury. This includes starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow and closer Edwin Diaz.

“I think we’re prepared to do whatever we can,” Dave Roberts said. “But I will say the most important thing is to keep the guys on their schedules. Not try to push too much because of circumstances with the rotation. Because then you start to compromise their health. So whether we backfill somehow or do bullpen days, we’re prepared to do whatever it takes.”

Glasnow was placed on the 15-day IL last week due to a back issue. However, his return is now likely to be longer than expected. Meanwhile, Snell will probably have the same procedure that Diaz underwent last month to remove loose bodies in his right elbow.
