Max Fried has become an indispensable component of the New York Yankees’ pitching staff after signing an eight-year, $208 million contract at the start of the 2025 campaign. He was the de facto ace of the Yankees’ rotation in the absence of Gerrit Cole last season. But with Cole getting close to his return from the IL, Fried is now on the sidelines.

The New York Yankees placed Max Fried on the 15-day IL this Friday due to a left elbow bone bruise. According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the 32-year-old left-hander underwent MRI and CT scans on Thursday. He will also have further consultation with Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Fried will undergo further scans weeks later before he resumes throwing again.

LHP Max Fried underwent an MRI and CT scan on Thursday that was followed up by an examination with Yankees Team Physician, Dr. Chris Ahmad. He will be placed on the 15-day I.L. after initial findings revealed a left elbow bone bruise. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will also review Thursday’s imaging,” Hoch posted on X.

“Repeat imaging will again be taken in a few weeks (or when asymptomatic) to further determine when Fried can resume throwing. A more specific return and rehab schedule will be determined at that time.”

Fried made his 10th start of the season for the Yankees on May 13. He came off after throwing just 61 pitches, allowing three earned runs over 3.0 innings. It was the third straight outing in which Fried allowed three or more runs.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted that Max Fried’s joining the IL is a big blow for the team. However, on the positive side, his UCL shows no serious damage, so there is no major threat in the long run.

“In some ways, it’s good news,” Boone said. “The ligament is in good shape. It’s just a matter of how the timeline is going to shake out. Long-term, I feel like we’re in an OK spot. We’ll just listen to the body here over the next days and weeks and see what ultimately that timeline leads to.”

Fried finished fourth in the American League Cy Young race last year. He already has 1.6 bWAR to his name this season with a 3.21 ERA, while leading the MLB with 61.2 innings.
