The Spurs-Thunder NBA Finals series is going to keep people intrigued for about a week, and the trends are already showing great signs.

With the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs set to battle for a spot in the NBA Finals, the league revealed the referee crew that will oversee the winner-take-all showdown.

According to the latest update, veteran official Marc Davis will serve as crew chief alongside John Goble and Josh Tiven, while Mitchell Ervin will serve as the alternate referee.

However, the announcement immediately sent fans into detective mode.

Social media quickly filled with reactions from both fan bases, with many claiming the assignment favored either Oklahoma City or San Antonio before the opening tip had even taken place.

Given how closely contested this Western Conference Finals has been, analysts and fans expect to scrutinize every officiating decision.

That reaction is understandable, given how many foul calls have shaped the conversation throughout the series. Oklahoma City’s ability to draw contact, led by MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, has been a constant talking point, while Spurs players have openly questioned the level of physicality allowed on both sides.

Additionally, the numbers only add more fuel to the discussion. Through the first six games of the series, the team that committed more fouls lost every game except Game 2, when both teams finished with exactly 21 fouls.

Game 5 generated the loudest controversy after referees whistled San Antonio for 29 fouls compared to Oklahoma City’s 22.

Interestingly, Davis previously worked Game 3 of the series, a contest in which referees charged the Spurs with 28 fouls, compared to 25 for the Thunder.

“Shai seeing no Tony Brothers,” a third fan said, adding a funny Homelander GIF.

Whether any of that matters remains to be seen. What is certain is that every whistle in Game 7 will be magnified as Oklahoma City and San Antonio fight for the Western Conference crown and a trip to the NBA Finals.
