Curtis Washington Jr.’s path to the majors wasn’t supposed to look like this. Most prospects grind through Double-A and Triple-A before getting the call. However, on June 17, the Seattle Mariners went outside the box. 

Seattle didn’t call up a top-ranked prospect, tearing up the minors. They handed one of the most surprising promotions of the 2026 season to an outfielder batting .190, who was still playing in High-A Everett just days earlier. Per the Mariners’ official announcement, Curtis Washington Jr. was selected from High-A Everett. This was after star outfielder Randy Arozarena landed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. 

The 26-year-old outfielder, originally a 19th-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, can play center field and both corner spots. Mariners beat writer Ryan Divish reported that logistics played a big role in the decision. Everett was the closest affiliate available while Triple-A Tacoma was in Utah and Double-A Arkansas was in Texas.

As for Curtis Washington, he enters the majors with a .190 average, eight doubles, seven home runs, 22 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases in 44 games for Everett. His most proper minor-league moment came in May 2025, when he hit for the cycle with Single-A Modesto. 

Should Fantasy Managers Take a Chance on Curtis Washington Jr.?

Fantasy managers may want to keep an eye on Washington Jr. after the Mariners brought him to the big leagues. Per MLB Pipeline’s Julian Brooke, Washington’s value isn’t tied to his bat right now. It is, in fact, his speed, defense, and ability to cover multiple outfield spots that might carve out opportunities if Seattle keeps him around.

For fantasy purposes, he’s more of a watch-list candidate than a must-add pickup. Still, stolen bases can swing matchups, and Curtis Washington Jr. did show us that skill throughout the minors. If regular playing time follows, he could become an intriguing waiver-wire name in the coming weeks.
