“He has not filed his retirement papers,” Wilson said. “He has told former teammates from the Bengals that his career is over.”

The uncertainty traces back to a mysterious foot injury that wiped out Mixon’s entire 2025 season with the Houston Texans. Rumors about how the injury happened spread quickly, including one particularly bizarre claim that Wilson shot down directly.
“He did not shoot himself in the foot,” Wilson said. “That was a ridiculous urban legend. It was not true at all.”
Other unconfirmed reports suggested Mixon may have injured his foot during an offseason accident before seeking treatment from a doctor outside the team’s medical staff, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

“The good news is that Joe is healthier,” Wilson said. “I believe that surgery helped this offseason as far as just normal life kind of stuff. So yeah, I wish Joe the best. A really unfortunate situation.”
Mixon spent his first seven NFL seasons with Cincinnati after the Bengals selected him in the second round of the 2017 draft, becoming one of the franchise’s most productive backs and helping lead the team to Super Bowl LVI.
