Media Blackout: Major TV Networks Facing Intense Backlash Over Jed York Arrest Coverage
San Francisco 49ers principal owner Jed York was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, on Sunday. He was caught in an undercover prostitution sting.
Initially, the incident began when York allegedly responded to an undercover advertisement posted on a known prostitution website. York used his cellphone to arrange a sexual encounter with a female in exchange for $140.
Subsequently, York traveled to the agreed-upon meeting spot at the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community in East Palestine, Ohio. Upon his arrival, he was immediately taken into custody by the East Palestine Police Department, who were assisting the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.
Unlike when NFL players get in trouble, it seems that Jed York’s arrest is flying under the radar.
Networks Caught Ignoring Jed York Prostitution Sting Arrest Headlines
Instead of providing rigorous journalistic evaluations, major sports channels largely ignored his serious legal situation.
“Whether and to what extent ESPNFL covers the Jed York arrest will say plenty about ESPN’s true independence after selling 10 percent of the company to the league,” Pro Football Talk wrote.
The explicit corporate silence deeply shocked casual viewers and internet users across the country.
Flagship shows, such as ESPN’s First Take, failed entirely to mention the developing arrest sequence live on air. Because of this sudden news omission, fans began accusing the network of protecting high-level league partners.
Multiple Networks Didn’t Address The Situation Immediately
The Worldwide Leader in Sports took its time speaking about Jed York, as Awful Announcing noted.
“In the two hours after the story initially broke, ESPN failed to address York’s arrest in any meaningful way. First Take did not mention the arrest, despite being on the air for over an hour after reports first surfaced. When Pat McAfee came on the air, he alluded to York’s arrest at the top of his show, but largely in jest. A subsequent segment with ESPN’s top NFL insider Adam Schefter included no discussion of the story, except for a brief tease that it happened before McAfee asked Schefter about a different 49ers storyline: George Kittle’s injury,” they wrote.
They also called out FS1 and CBS Sports.
“Meanwhile, FS1 was stuck in a re-air of Wake Up Barstool during the first 90 minutes following the breaking news. When Colin Cowherd’s radio show came on, the FS1 host led with his planned monologue and briefly mentioned he’d discuss the news later in the show,” Awful Announcing added.
“CBS Sports HQ seemed to ignore the story entirely, instead running through the top NFL storylines of the day.”
York may have faced the long arm of the law, but he still has to answer to the NFL.
