Trent Dilfer’s Brutal Coaching Blunder Costs High School Team In Controversial Overtime Loss

Trent Dilfer’s return to Lipscomb Academy started with a heartbreaking loss and plenty of second-guessing.
The Mustangs opened their 2026 season on Friday with a 27-24 overtime loss to McCallie. The entire game came down to a couple of controversial goal-line calls, leaving Lipscomb convinced the referees missed a touchdown.
To make matters worse, Dilfer faced heavy criticism for his play-calling on the final snap. Instead of lining up under center at the goal line, Lipscomb ran a play out of the shotgun, and McCallie’s defense blew it up to seal the win.
A Tough Call At The Goal Line

Lipscomb and McCallie battled to a 24-24 tie late in regulation. With 11 seconds left, Lipscomb kicker Tyler Robbins missed a 46-yard field goal that could have won the game.

Lipscomb then chose to go for the win instead of forcing a second overtime. The Mustangs reached the McCallie 3-yard line and faced third down.
They tried to punch the ball into the end zone, but McCallie stopped the play. Lipscomb got one more chance on fourth down.
The Mustangs ran another play from the shotgun. The running back started about five yards behind the line. McCallie again made the stop.

Lipscomb’s players were convinced they crossed the goal line on both tries, and videos circulating after the game only added to the issue. A few replay angles made it look like the ball was right on, or even across, the goal line, but the refs saw it differently.
Still, the biggest question among fans was why Dilfer decided to call a play out of the shotgun when they were just inches away from the end zone.
A short-yardage run from under center could have put the ball closer to the line before the handoff. Instead, the shotgun snap forced the runner to cover extra ground.
Dilfer returned to Lipscomb after UAB fired him in 2024. His first stint with the Mustangs produced two state titles. He now starts his second run with a 0-1 record.
The loss may hurt even more because Lipscomb had a chance to win it twice at the goal line.
