Hayden Panettiere’s Official Cause Of Death Revealed, Troubling New Details Uncovered One Month Later
Hayden Panettiere died from an accidental overdose of several drugs, including fentanyl, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office officially confirmed it a month after her death.
The actress died on August 16 at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after getting a call about an unresponsive woman and suspected an overdose right away. She was just 36 years old.
A spokesperson for the coroner’s office confirmed the details, adding that the autopsy showed no signs of physical injuries or trauma. The office officially ruled her death an accident.
Coroner Confirms Multiple Drugs Involved
The coroner’s office identified fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine as the drugs involved in Panettiere’s death.
The spokesman said, “The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine.” He also said the office had closed the case administratively.
Fentanyl played a major role in the findings. The powerful opioid can cause a fatal overdose even in very small amounts.
The other drugs also have different medical uses. Alprazolam, better known as Xanax, treats anxiety and panic disorders. Methocarbamol works as a prescription muscle relaxant. Doctors use quetiapine, also known as Seroquel, to treat conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.
The coroner’s office also identified 4-ANPP, a chemical used to make illegal fentanyl.
The new findings differ from earlier reports about the circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death. TMZ previously reported that authorities believed she had consumed a single oxycodone pill containing fentanyl. Sources also told the outlet that Panettiere had obtained narcotics illegally from a longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles.
Panettiere’s representative urged people to wait for the official toxicology results earlier this month. The representative called reports from unnamed sources “unverified hearsay” and said conflicting information had circulated.
Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, and his brother Zach were at the residence when first responders arrived. Hickerson’s lawyer, Sloan Ellis, said Aug. 20 that police had found no signs of foul play and asked people to allow the investigation to continue.
Panettiere became a familiar face on television after starring as Claire Bennet in “Heroes.” She later played Juliette Barnes on “Nashville,” earning two Golden Globe nominations for the role.
She also appeared in films including Remember the Titans, Bring It On: All or Nothing, Scream 4, and Scream VI.
Panettiere leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former fiance Wladimir Klitschko.
