Arch Manning’s future at Texas does not look so certain after another disappointing result left Steve Sarkisian searching for answers.

The Longhorns suffered a 27-24 home loss to Florida on Saturday, marking their second consecutive defeat. Texas had entered the season with national championship expectations, but those hopes are quickly fading.

It appears that Manning is now facing competition for his starting role.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Texas plans to give redshirt freshman KJ Lacey increased first-team quarterback reps during this week’s practices. Manning’s struggles have put the position under scrutiny, forcing Sarkisian to evaluate everything.

This arrives on the back of a brutal Mel Kiper snub.

Manning went 14-of-20 for 173 passing yards and a touchdown vs. the Gators, taking five sacks and making a costly fumble late in the contest.

Sarkisian has refused to rule out changes as he searches for answers. His comments after the loss made clear that the coaching staff will review the offense, including the quarterback position.

Some fans believe Texas should have made a change earlier.

“It just shows you all the so called NFL/College experts are a bunch of sheep who follow with the narrative. Eye test day one said he was average,” one wrote.

“Sark owes Quinn Ewers a huge apology. The Ewers/Manning controversy reminded me of when Mack Brown benched Major Applewhite for Chris Simms–son of NFL QB Matt Simms. Stop elevating QBs based on who they are related to,” another fan argued.

Lacey now has an opportunity to make his case in practice. Whether that translates into a change on game day remains to be seen.

Texas faces No. 7 Ole Miss next, giving Sarkisian little time to fix an offense that has stalled in back-to-back losses.
