Christian McCaffrey Sounds Off On The ‘Criminal’ State Of The Running Back Market (TWEET)
Running backs all over the league are not happy about what is going on with their position and how devalued it has become.
Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Tony Pollard all failed to reach long-term extension agreements with their respective teams before Monday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.
San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey – who tops the position in average annual salary – called what those players are going through ‘criminal.’
Pollard signed his one-year tender with the Cowboys and will earn $10.09 million in 2023. Barkley and Jacobs haven’t signed their franchise tags as of yet. It remains to be seen if either running back wants to take it to the next level and actually miss games to prove a point.
Barkley, the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, as he helped the Giants not only reach the playoffs, but secure a wild-card victory over the Vikings.
Jacobs earned his first first-team All-Pro nod after leading the league with 2,053 scrimmage yards. He also scored 12 touchdowns in 2022.
McCaffrey leads all running backs with an average annual salary of $16 million. He finished last season making 11 game appearances for the 49ers. He rushed for 746 yards on 159 carries with six touchdowns.
With McCaffrey on the roster, the 49ers made it to the NFC championship game, where they lost to the Eagles.
