A surprise NFC club has been mentioned as a possible suitor free agent running back Leonard Fournette.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Fournette earlier this offseason, just one year after they extended him for $21 million over three years. The two-time 1,000-yard rusher visited with the New England Patriots last month but left without a deal.

Matt Lombardo of FanBuzz looked at the best possible landing spots for the Super Bowl 55 champion. Lombardo mentioned the Dallas Cowboys as a possible fit for the No. 4 selection of the 2017 NFL Draft:

“Tony Pollard is back on the field for the Cowboys, and by all accounts from Oxnard looks ready to ease any lingering concerns from his broken leg and high-ankle sprain suffered in Dallas’ playoff loss to the 49ers back in January.

Meanwhile, explosive rookie Deuce Vaughn has turned heads as an early training camp standout, after being chosen in the sixth-round of April’s draft. However, all signs point to the Cowboys signing a veteran to add some insurance in the backfield, as well as a short-yardage and goal-line battering ram. Fournette may be an ideal fit, boasting 31 career touchdowns from inside the 10-yard line.”

Fournette never put up all-world numbers with the Bucs, but he was a touchdown machine with 22 total scores over his three years there (17 rushing, five receiving). He had four total touchdowns in the Bucs’ Super Bowl 55 championship run.

Dallas already has a proven RB1 in Tony Pollard and rookie Deuce Vaughn, who turned heads with an incredible performance in Saturday’s preseason action. But it doesn’t hurt to add insurance, and the hard-running and powerful Fournette is ultra-reliable in goal-to-go situations.
