High School Football Coach Resigns After Using Despicable ‘Nazi’ Play Call During Game
Some people can be quite nasty for no reason at all and they’ve gotten away with it for so long because they were never checked on it.
That changed for one football coach this week.
A high school football coach in Ohio has resigned after he and his team used the word “Nazi” as part of their playcalling during a recent game.
TMZ Sports reported head coach Tim McFarland of the Brooklyn Hurricanes and his players yelled the word “Nazi” during their game against Beachwood High School. It was done purposely as Beachwood is part of a Cleveland suburb with a very large Jewish population.
The incident took place two nights before Yom Kippur, one of the high holidays of Judaism.
McFarland has resigned as head coach of Brooklyn after serving in the role for two years.
According to a statement from Beachwood Schools Superintendent Robert Hardis, the call was not used in the second half only due to Beachwood’s vow to game officials that they would pull their players from the field if the inappropriate language continued. The threat didn’t work as Brooklyn players continued to use racial slurs toward Beachwood players, Hardis’s statement said.
“This is not the first time Beachwood student-athletes have been subjected to antisemitic and racist speech,” said Hardis. “We always hope it will be the last.”
Brooklyn Schools Superintendent Ted Caleris also added in a statement that McFarland “expressed deep regret” and that both the coach and the school apologized for the “hurtful and harmful speech” used during the game.
