A D.J. Moore reception sparked a bit of controversy on social media after fans weren’t convinced referees made the correct decision in ruling the Bears wide receiver out of bounds on a big play that was likely headed for a touchdown.

Late into the third quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Commanders, Moore caught a pass along the sideline and broke free as he headed for what should’ve been his third touchdown of the night.

However, an official whistled the play dead after indicating that Moore stepped out of bounds. No replay would be shown by Amazon Prime Video’s broadcast.

On X, Kirk Herbstreit owned up to that mistake in the booth.

“Hey. Speaking for me personally I was so locked in on the throw vs soft coverage and DJ getting another opportunity to make a big play after the catch that my attention was on his physicality and burst and didn’t see it was that close to him staying in bounds,” Herbstreit explained. “That’s on me I apologize. FG on that drive made it 30-14. Pride myself on seeing it all-missed it being that close on the push out of bounds.”

In the end, DJ Moore had a historic performance in Week 5 against the Commanders. The Chicago Bears traded for DJ Moore for nights like Thursday. The receiver was the best player on the field in Chicago’s 40-20 blowout win.

Moore tallied eight receptions, 230 yards, and three touchdowns in the Bears’ victory over the Commanders to give the Bears their first win in almost a year.

The Bears will look to build on this when they face the Minnesota Vikings next week.
