BREAKING: Colts Work Out Former Super Bowl Champion WR & Highly-Touted First-Round Pick
The Indianapolis Colts worked out a former first-round pick and highly-touted wide receiver on Monday.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Colts worked out veteran wideout Sammy Watkins. The No. 4 pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, who won a Super Bowl 54 championship ring with the Kansas City Chiefs, split last season with the Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens.
Watkins has also played for the Buffalo Bills (2014 to 2016) and Los Angeles Rams (2017). He played for the Chiefs from 2018 to 2020 before joining Baltimore in 2021. He rejoined the Ravens late last season after being waived by the Packers.
The Colts have one of football’s top receiving duos in Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie sensation Joshua Downs. Pittman Jr. has 58 receptions for 593 yards and three touchdowns, and Downs has recorded 41 catches for 483 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Despite losing starting QB and promising rookie Anthony Richardson for the season last month, the Colts have fielded a top-10 offense under first-year head coach Shane Steichen.
Indy has averaged an impressive 25.8 points per game with backup Gardner Minshew II seeing most of the action under center. Running backs Zack Moss (615 yards) and Jonathan Taylor (254 yards in five games), have also played key roles in the Colts’ surprising success on offense.
The Colts defeated the Carolina Panthers on Sunday to improve to 4-5 on the year. They are one and a half games out of the three AFC wild card spots, occupied by the 5-3 Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns.
