Week 18 saw some incredible defensive performances put up a strong fight to the finish line as the 2023 regular season came to its inevitable conclusion. A couple defenses helped their respective teams punch their tickets to the playoffs while other defenses let their playoff hopes slip away.
Here is where all 32 NFL Teams’ defenses look after week 18 games:
Arizona Cardinals: D (Last week C-)
The Cardinals’ defense couldn’t stop the Seattle Seahawks in their very close 20-21 loss to conclude the regular season. Budda Baker had 10 tackles, Krys Barnes had six tackles, and Starling Thomas V had five tackles. A very tough loss for the Cardinals, as they head into the 2024 offseason with Barnes, Antonio Hamilton Sr., and Rashad Fenton set to become free agents. The team needs to continue to rebuild and retool things for a better 2024 regular season.
Atlanta Falcons: D+ (Last week D+)
The Falcons’ defense couldn’t get a stop against the fast and aggressive New Orleans Saints in their 17-48 loss. Nate Landman had 10 tackles, Richie Grant had 10 tackles and a sack, Calaisa Campbell had five tackles and a sack, and Bud Dupree had a tackle and a sack. A tough 2023 season is over for the Falcons. They enter the 2024 offseason trying to improve on all sides of the ball for a better 2024 season.

Taron Johnson had nine tackles, Taylor Rapp had a tackle and an interception, Christian Benfordd had three tackles and an interception, and Tyrel Dodson had three tackles and a sack. Derrick Brown had seven tackles, a sack, and a pass deflection, Yetur Gross-Matos had five tackles and a sack, and Brian Burns had two tackles and a sack. The Panthers’ defense has a good amount of work to do, to get back on track, to be a strong defensive unit- like they were in the 2015 season.
Chicago Bears: D (Last week B-)
The Bears’ defense fell back down to earth in their 9-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers. T.J. Edwards had 10 tackles, DeMarcus Walker had a tackle and the team’s only sack, and Tremaine Edmunds had nine tackles. It was a rough afternoon for the Bears, as they had no answers on how to stop the Packers. They enter the 2024 offseason only looking to improve, with Montez Sweat in the lineup, for a full upcoming regular season.

Dax Hill had five tackles, Jordan Battle had four tackles, a sack, two pass deflections, and an interception, Logan Wilson had five tackles, a pass deflection, and an interception returned for 26 yards, and BJ Hill had four tackles and 0.5 sacks. Despite not making the playoffs, the Bengals’ defense looked great and needs to keep the unit intact for the 2024 season.

Tony Fields II had 10 tackles, Duron Harmon had seven tackles and a sack, Alex Wright had six tackles and a sack, Isaiah McGuire had five tackles and a sack, and D’Anthony Bell had six tackles, a pass deflection, and an interception returned for two yards. Josey Jewell had nine tackles and a sack, Baron Browning had two tackles and a sack, and Nik Bonitto had a tackle and a sack. The Broncos also didn’t have any interceptions or fumble recoveries. As they enter the 2024 offseason they will continue their rebuild, as they hope to return to glory during the 2024 regular season.

Quay Walker had nine tackles and a sack, Karl Brooks had two tackles and a sack, Lukas Van Ness had two tackles and a sack, Kenny Clakr had two tackles and a sack, and Devonte Wyatt had a tackle and a sack. The Packers didn’t have any interceptions or fumble recoveries but five sacks and a trip to the playoffs made up for it! Their attention is set towards possibly defeating the Dallas Cowboys in wildcard weekend.
Houston Texans: C+ (Last week C)
The Texans’ defense played a decent battle in their 23-19 statement victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Blake Cashman had 13 tackles, Christian Harris had 12 tackles and the team’s only sack, and Henry To’oTo’o had a fumble recovery. The Texans’ defense played well as they helped secure the AFC South crown- as well as a spot in the playoffs. DeMeco Ryans and defensive coordinator Matt Burke deserve much credit for helping get the Texans to where they are now.

The Colts’ defense played an average game as they fell to the Houston Texans 19-23. E.J. Speed had 13 tackles, DeForest Buckner had six tackles and a sack, and Ronnie Harrison Jr. had five tackles and a sack. Rayshawn Jenkins had seven tackles, Josh Allen had five tackles and a sack, Travon Walker had two tackles and a sack, and Andre Cisco had two tackles and an interception returned for 29 yards. Mike Edwards had a fumble recovery that became a touchdown, Cam Jones had 12 tackles, Malik Herring had five tackles and a sack, Charles Omenihu had two tackles and a sack, and Chris Jones had a tackle and a sack. The Chiefs’ defense turn their attention to the Miami Dolphins coming to Arrowhead Stadium for their upcoming playoff matchup.

Isaiah Pola-Mao had three tackles and a sack, Maxx Crosby had two tackles and a sack, Malcolm Koonce had two tackles and a sack, Adam Butler had two tackles and a sack, and Tyree Wilson had a tackle and a sack. Derwin James Jr. had eight tackles, Khalil Mack had five tackles and the team’s only sack, and Alohi Glilmand had three tackles and an interception. This wasn’t the way the Chargers’ defense wanted to end the 2023 season. They need a new head coach to lead this talented team to the promised land in the 2024 regular season.

The Rams’ defense played strong as they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 21-20. Nicholas Morrow had 11 tackles, Kelee Ringo had three tackles and a sack, Marlon Tuipulotu had three tackles and a sack, and Reed Blankenship had five tackles and an interception. The Eagles regular season may have ended on a small sour note with a loss to their NFC East rivals and losing first place in the division to the Dallas Cowboys, but they can still make a strong run in the playoffs depending on how they finish against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Isaiah Oliver had 10 tackles, Tayler Hawkins had four tackles and an interception, Oren Burks had seven tackles and a sack, and Robert Beal Jr. had three tackles and a sack. The Seahawks’ defense played an average battle, in their very close 21-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals despite missing out on the playoffs. Bobby Wagner had 15 tackles, Darrell Taylor had four tackles and the team’s only sack, and Devon Witherspoon had 11 tackles.
