REPORT: Details Emerge On The Future Of Dallas Cowboys’ Superstar Amid Retirement Speculation
New details have emerged on the future of a Dallas Cowboys superstar and future Hall of Famer amid retirement rumors.
There have been talks about eight-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith either retiring or getting outright released by the Cowboys this offseason. Smith, who turned 33 in December, has been limited to 30 games over the last four years due to injuries.
According to a report from Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, retirement is not on Smith’s mind at this time. On top of that, Watkins added that Smith hopes to return to the Cowboys in 2024:
“Tyron Smith, the longest-tenured player on the Cowboys, wants to play another season with the team, a person familiar with his thinking told The Dallas Morning News.
Smith, 33, becomes an unrestricted free agent this spring and there is uncertainty about a return. Smith has been named to eight Pro Bowl teams with two All-Pro selections. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade 2010s team as well.”
The Cowboys drafted Tyler Smith in the first round (24th overall) in 2022. The Cowboys decided to put Smith at left guard, and he has excelled at that position.
Though injuries have kept him on the sidelines aplenty since 2020, Tyron has shown zero signs of slowing down. Pro Football Focus graded Smith at 83.8, and he allowed only one sack on 847 offensive snaps.
The Cowboys have the 24th pick in this year’s draft, so they’re in good position to draft Tyron’s replacement if they decided to trade or cut him.
Since Smith’s arrival in 2011, Dallas has only had two losing seasons (2015 and 2020). They’ve made the postseason six times with Smith, winning the NFC East division crown in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2023.
