The NFL competition committee is rumored to be discussing whether or not to ban a controversial play from the game forever.

The NFL Competition Committee is reportedly working to remove hip-drop tackles with a new rule, per NFL.com’s Judy Battista.

According to Battista the committee is “aligned” on getting rid of hip-drop tackles but is still working on figuring out the right language for the new rule.

In a hip-drop tackle, the defensive player approaches from behind or the side wraps his arms around the offensive player, and becomes dead weight while dropping to the ground.

Much of the time, the defensive player’s body lands on the offensive player’s legs and it leads to serious injuries.

According to NFL executive Jeff Miller, the hip-drop tackle increases the risk of injury by 25 times the rate of a regular tackle.

In Week 4 last year, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith suffered a knee injury during a Monday night game when Isaiah Simmons hip-drop tackled him.

In November, a hip-drop tackle sidelined Ravens tight end Mark Andrews until the playoffs. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill also suffered an ankle injury due to that tackle.

If the NFL bans the hip-drop tackle, it will be the latest style of tackle the league has taken action against.
