The college football community is in mourning after news was passed down that Appalachian State offensive lineman John “Jack” Murphy has died, Mountaineers head coach Shawn Clark announced.

The Appalachian State offensive lineman passed away last week, the university confirmed.

Murphy, an offensive lineman from Fairfax, Va., died Friday, but Appalachian State did not provide the circumstances surrounding his sudden and tragic death.

In a statement from the university obtained by The Watauga Democrat, Murphy died on Friday.

“It is with deep sadness that we can confirm the death of Appalachian State University student John ‘Jack’ Murphy on April 26,” Sr. Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Communications Officer Megan Hayes told the outlet.

“The hearts of the App State community are with Jack’s loved ones during this very difficult time. We are respecting his family’s wishes and requests and are providing support and assistance as requested.”

No foul play was suspected in the Appalachian State offensive lineman’s death.

Murphy joined Appalachian State for his first season of play in 2023 as a redshirt junior. According to his bio, Murphy, an offensive lineman who transferred from Marshall, started every one of Appalachian State’s 14 games.

After starting the season at left tackle, he switched to right tackle for the rest of it. After finishing second in the Sun Belt, Appalachian State won the Cure Bowl over Miami, Ohio. Murphy’s efforts in 2023 earned him a spot on the third team of the All-Sun Belt.

A native of Fairfax, Virginia, Murphy spent three seasons at Marshall before joining the Mountaineers.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers got back to their bowl game-winning ways in 2023 when they faced off and defeated Miami(Ohio) in the Cure Bowl with a 13-9 final score.

No one knew at the time that offensive lineman Jack Murphy would be playing in his final game as his life would tragically come to an end this month.

In the last eight bowl games, the Appalachian State Mountaineers have won seven of them, with their only loss coming in 2021 at the Boca Raton Bowl.
