The Boston Celtics entered the NBA finale highly favored to win against the Dallas Mavericks due to their continuous success for the last several years. As they took the series lead with 2-0, Celtics star Jrue Holiday shared a sobering message to his teammates and fans.
Despite the early success, Holiday stressed that the Celtics have not yet achieved their ultimate goal of winning the championship.
“I think being able to go through wins and losses and to build something, it means a lot. So when you go through things like that, I think it makes you closer, and I think that that’s what this team has done. The journey’s been awesome, but at the end of the day, the job’s not done,” Holiday said.
The Celtics have made multiple appearances in the NBA Finals in recent years. However, their quest for another championship title has not been fulfilled since their last triumph 2008.
Jrue Holiday Shares Focus on Winning Over Personal Glory
At some points of the game, Jrue Holiday was seemingly a one-man army for the Celtics. Yet, the Celtics star has to see himself at the level of his teammates, ECF MVP Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
During a press conference, Holiday was questioned about his perception of himself compared to his superstar status. He modestly referred to himself as a “utility guy,” sharing his primary focus on contributing to the team’s success rather than individual accolades.
“Utility guy… I’m here to win. The pressure that they have to execute and be great is a little bit different than my pressure,” Holiday said.
Holiday ended Game 2 with 26 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block, and an impressive 78% field goal percentage, per ESPN.
