“It Will Be Forgotten” – UFC Legend Dismisses Tom Aspinall’s Role In Jon Jones’ Legacy
MMA fans are like children, always debating who could beat up who. These days, Jon Jones’ name often tops that list. Tom Aspinall, the interim heavyweight champ, has been calling out Jones. Some folks think Jones needs to fight Aspinall to cement his legacy, but not Matt Brown.
The UFC veteran had some thoughts on the matter. He thinks Jones has nothing left to prove and has surpassed every expectation in his illustrious career. Brown argued that the chatter about Jones ducking Aspinall would fizzle out very quickly.
“The fact is, it will be forgotten. No matter what Tom does. If Jon retires after he beats Stipe, we’re in the age of news is news for a day. Maybe for a day or two, there will be some people on Reddit saying Jon was scared of Tom or whatever. By next week or whatever … he’ll still be the greatest ever,” Brown said on The Fighter vs. The Writer.
Matt Brown has a point. He further cemented his case with the case of Georges St-Pierre, when he ghosted Robert Whittaker after winning the middleweight belt. No one remembers that, and it’s ancient history from the fight years.
But let’s be real. Jones’ legacy is complicated. Brown acknowledged the elephant in the room: banned substances. According to Brown, that’s the only real mark against Jones’ GOAT status. So, the takeaway is that Aspinall might be shouting into the void. Jones’ legacy is pretty much set in stone, with or without facing the new blood.
Jon Jones Confident That His Legacy Will Be Fine Without Tom Aspinall
The reigning UFC heavyweight champ, Jones, has been pretty vocal about not needing to face Aspinall. He is adamant that his resume speaks for itself and that he will be fine without adding Aspinall to the mix.
Let’s rewind a bit. Jones hasn’t stepped into the octagon since March 2023. That’s when he choked out Ciryl Gane to secure the heavyweight title. He was supposed to face Stipe Miocic last November. But an injury put that plan on ice. Jones recently took aim at Aspinall.
“My legacy will be just fine. I’ve done way too much work in this game…He [Aspinall] would have to go on and win like 10 championships at least in order for that to happen. The work I put in, that body of work ain’t getting touched no time soon,” wrote Jones via X.
‘Bones‘ even threw some shade Aspinall’s way. He suggested Tom Aspinall was making him “more relevant than ever.” Jon Jones insisted that he was solely focused on Miocic. He seems confident he doesn’t need Aspinall to cement his legacy. He might be right. But in a sport where fans crave action, talk is cheap.
