After Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway recently moved up to the lightweight division, Alexander Volkanovski seemed to have no major or threatening challenge left at featherweight. However, Lerone Murphy has proven that the division still has the guys who can knock out in just one hit. His brutal knockout of Aaron Pico, who was seen as the next big thing in the division, made a noise that echoed all the way to Australia. Now, Volkanovski is ready to face Murphy this December.

At UFC 319, Murphy scored a first-round spinning elbow knockout against Aaron Pico in the co-main event. Right after the win, he officially challenged the featherweight champion, Volkanovski, saying, “I’m next in line.” Volkanovski quickly reacted on X, confirming that he will face Murphy in December. He said, “See you in December @LeroneMurphy, congrats.”

Murphy’s stunning knockout not only boosted his reputation but also pushed him straight into the title picture at featherweight. Now that Volkanovski has also shown he’s ready, the big question is whether Dana White will make this fight official.

At the press conference, all eyes were on Dana White when he was asked about the fight. He said he loved the idea, and seeing Volkanovski vs. Murphy would be great. Pico was the one many expected to rise, but after his debut loss, it’s clear that everyone wants Murphy next, from Volkanovski to Dana White.

Indeed, after losing to Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria, Volkanovski didn’t seem like he could return, but his win over Diego Lopes helped him get his title back. Now he’s ready to defend it again. Murphy is still unbeaten, and this fight is his big chance to become champion without ever losing.
