San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox faces an unexpected delay in securing his much-anticipated contract extension. The 27-year-old recently became eligible for a four-year, $229 million deal that would lock him in as a key part of the Spurs’ future.

Fox’s arrival last season sparked excitement alongside young star Victor Wembanyama. Together, they formed one of the NBA’s most promising duos, but injuries limited their time on the court. Fox showed strong potential with an average of 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in 17 games before a finger injury ended his season.

Further complications arose when Fox pulled out of the 2025 Curry Brand world tour in Asia due to muscle pain. Though the injuries are mild, they raised concerns about his health going into the next season. However, an NBA insider reports that the San Antonio Spurs may hold off on starting negotiations for now.

Besides the injuries, trade rumors circulate as rookie Dylan Harper’s strong summer league showing fuels speculation about Fox’s role. The Spurs are taking a cautious approach. As the offseason continues, they appear ready to weigh all options before deciding on Fox’s extension.

As per Joe Mayo of SI, a proposed three-team trade could send Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox to the Chicago Bulls. The deal would also involve the Spurs and Atlanta Hawks in reshaping each team’s roster before the new season.

The Bulls would receive Fox, young guard Kobe Bufkin, and a 2029 first-round pick that will boost their backcourt and future assets. The San Antonio Spurs would get Kevin Hueter, Coby White, and a 2027 first-round pick that adds depth and draft capital. Atlanta would receive Ayo Dosunmu to strengthen their bench with a solid two-way guard.

This trade shows how teams are preparing for the future. The Bulls rebuild around Fox, the Spurs get flexibility if they don’t keep Fox, and the Hawks add defensive depth.
