Recently, Leon Edwards was the top welterweight in the world. The fact that he had beaten Kamaru Usman, Colby Covington, and others had given him this status. However, consecutive losses to Belal Muhammad, in the process losing his crown, and then to Sean Brady at home lowered his standings. Edwards has a particular date in his mind to make his comeback and he is ready to once again prove his worth.

During a conversation with Bloody Elbow, the former welterweight king reveals he is targeting a November return at Madison Square Garden. What’s really intriguing is that he’s hoping to land on the same card as Jack Della Maddalena, a potential showdown with Islam Makhachev that would make for one hell of a stacked event.

November for sure…I think JDM is fighting Islam Makhachev at MSG, so I want to be on the same card, you know…Now I’m ready to go; I’ve waited for the division to settle a little bit, and now I’m ready to go. I’m one or two away from getting my belt back, so I’m locking in and I’m going to get it done,” Edwards said.

He knows he’s only a couple of strong performances away from getting his belt back, and that drive seems to be pushing him harder than ever. He finished training his brother Fabian Edwards and is now setting his sights on a return.

Since losing his welterweight title, Edwards has been closely watching the upcoming clash between JDM and Makhachev. Both could end up in his crosshairs as he climbs back toward championship gold, though he genuinely questions who poses the tougher test come November. He gives props to JDM’s scrambling skills and size advantage, while also respecting Islam’s physical presence in the octagon.

Veterans like Yoel Romero call JDM vs. Makhachev a genuine 50-50 fight. Both fighters bring unique strengths to the table, making it nearly impossible to pick a clear favorite.
