Islam Makhachev is dealing with more than just losing his title. After vacating his championship, he also lost something that might sting even more: his spot as the best fighter on the planet. Now, Team Khabib isn’t happy about Ilia Topuria sitting on top of both the division and the pound-for-pound rankings. When asked if he would fight Chimaev to reclaim his pound-for-pound status, Makhachev dodged the question.

During the Eagle FC press conference, Makhachev declined to comment on the prospect of facing Chimaev in the near future for the P4P number one spot. He indicated that he has his next significant challenge in the works, the title bout against Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev emphasized wanting to take things one step at a time and find out what comes next after this bout.

The Dagestani did not confirm any future matchups, keeping his plans private while preparing for his upcoming title challenge in Dagestan. “I have a really difficult fight ahead of me. We’ll fight, and then we’ll see what happens,” Makhachev said.

Truly, it would be a spectacular match for fight enthusiasts. The fighters are so formidable, and given that Chimaev has already fought at welterweight, the match isn’t merely speculative but could become a reality.

At UFC 319, reporters pressed Muhammad about whether he’d take on Makhachev for the welterweight title. Muhammad kept his response grounded – he’s putting all his energy into his upcoming fight and wants to make sure he’s completely ready before stepping up to face someone of Makhachev’s caliber.

When pressed to comment on the matchup at Makhachev, Muhammad avoided the question but wasn’t afraid to show his aspirations. The title most assuredly is in his sights. For the time being, however, he’s taking it one fight at a time and has to take care of business in his next bout before he can concern himself with championship gold.
