Adreian Payne had a short career in the NBA. He played one season for the Atlanta Hawks, three for the Minnesota Timberwolves and one for the Orlando Magic. Later, in his career, he also played in the European league.

Payne’s life was going peacefully until May 9, 2022. When Payne and his girlfriend, Tara Walker, had travelled to Lawrence Dority’s home in Orlando, Florida, in an attempt to prevent a domestic dispute, Payne was fatally shot.

The incident took place outside a townhouse complex off Curry Ford Road. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, when the deputies arrived at the incident, Payne was in his car with a gunshot wound.

After three years of this brutal incident, Payne finally got justice. According to Courtside Buzz, Dority was sentenced to life in prison.

Payne started his NBA journey after the Atlanta Hawks selected him with the 15th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. He immediately brought action for the Hawks in the 2014 summer league by averaging 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds. However, after playing 5 preseason games, he suffered plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

This led him to miss 10 straight games. Payne played five seasons in the NBA, during which he played the most games with the Minnesota Timberwolves. After Payne’s killer received a life sentence, the individual immediately reacted to the verdict.

“I will not spend my life in prison,” Dority said (Via Courtsize Buzz).

Before the judge handed down his sentence, Payne’s killer said, “I would like to first say my heart goes out to the family.”

It is surprising how a disagreement between the couple could escalate into such a brutal incident.
