Cleveland Guardians star closer Emmanuel Clase shocked MLB fans after he was reportedly involved in sports betting. The Guardians placed him on non-disciplinary paid leave, and the league is continuing an investigation.

Clase will not be able to pitch for a while until the league figures it all out. Despite being one of the best closers in the league, Clase’s reputation has been tarnished already. Along with Emmanuel Clase, his teammate, Luis Ortiz was also placed on non-disciplinary leave for the same reason. Neither pitcher will be able to pitch until August 31. However, MLB insider Zack Meisel thinks they might be out of the league forever.

“I have a hard time envisioning them (Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz) ever pitching in Major League Baseball again, honestly. Look, I don’t want to speculate on what the investigation might end up proving or disproving. But there was a player banned from baseball a year ago, and it was much, much less than this,” Meisel said via Audacy.

The MLB will need to collect concrete evidence on Clase and Ortiz. Until then, both pitchers will stay out. As for Meisel, he feels that they are gone for good.

Meisel further compared Emmanuel Clase and Ortiz with former San Diego Padres Tucupita Marcano. The pitcher was issued a lifetime ban from the MLB after he was reportedly caught violating the league’s gambling policy.

“It was a guy who was injured, sitting on the couch, who bet on his team. He had no influence in that. This is different. These were pitchers with the ball in their hands. And if you can’t trust that, there’s not a spot for you,” Meisel said.

“I don’t know what will happen,” Meisel said. “Don’t know what they found or what they think they will find… I have a really hard time picturing any scenario where they’re back pitching. This is rule number one,” Meisel continued.

Emmanuel Clase’s absence has been a huge loss for the Cleveland Guardians. He’s played a vital role in the playoffs, and the team will need to find a strong replacement.
