Miami Heat and Andrew Wiggins's harsh reality

The Miami Heat are entering a new era without Jimmy Butler, and they hope for a more focused and seamless season. While the team did not overhaul the roster, they added Norman Powell and Simone Fontecchio. They will lean on returning core pieces, such as Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and Andrew Wiggins. Rookie big man Ke’el Ware also remains a player to watch after a promising debut year.

Wiggins, acquired in the midseason deal that sent Butler to Golden State, posted solid numbers in 17 games. Still, he is yet to return to his 2022 All-Star form. With Miami coming off back-to-back first-round playoff exits, Wiggin’s performance and the team’s ceiling remain significant question marks.

“Let’s start with who’s better. I see six teams, for sure: New York, Cleveland, Orlando, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee. Philadelphia is better if they’re healthy. So I would say the Heat’s a solid play-in team,” the scout stated. “It’s around a .500 team. If they won 45, it would be a great year. They’re not bad, but they’re not good. Chicago is mediocre.”

Despite cautious optimism in South Beach, not everyone is sold on the Heat’s chances. Speaking to the Miami Herald, a veteran Eastern Conference scout did not hesitate to place Miami outside the top tier in the East. He listed six teams, including the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks, as clearly better, with the Philadelphia 76ers in that mix if healthy.

The Miami Heat are exploring trade options for Andrew Wiggins after a quiet offseason despite promising big chances. Wiggins drew interest, most notably from the Los Angeles Lakers, though Miami’s high asking demand, including a first-round pick, slowed the progress.

One proposed deal sends Wiggins and Haywood Highsmith to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Khris Middleton and two 2026 second-round picks. This would clear Miami’s cap space ahead of the 2026 season.

Wiggins averaged 19.0 points in 17 games with Miami, but he is reportedly not part of the team’s long-term plans. A move before the season or at the deadline could surely land.
