The Miami Dolphins are changing things up a bit, and this time, it’s in the quarterback room. Just when everyone thought the depth chart was set, Coach Mike McDaniel surprised everyone just before their Week 7 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Tua Tagovailoa is still the man under center, but there’s a new name right behind him. Rookie Quinn Ewers, a seventh-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, will now serve as the backup quarterback. Zach Wilson, who joined Miami on a $6 million deal this offseason, slides to the No. 3 spot.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport broke the news Sunday morning, confirming that Ewers will be active for the first time this season. “The Dolphins are making a change to their QB depth chart for today’s game,” Rapoport reported. “Quinn Ewers will serve as the backup to Tua Tagovailoa for their matchup against the Browns. This is the first game active for the rookie seventh-rounder.”

This move comes as the Dolphins travel to Cleveland for what’s expected to be a windy and wet matchup. If weather conditions turn ugly, Miami might need Ewers to see real NFL snaps sooner than expected.

Ewers earned this chance after a steady preseason, completing 23 of 43 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t commit a single turnover and looked poised in limited action. The former Texas standout finished his final college season with 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, leading the SEC in both categories.

Wilson, meanwhile, has had a quiet year with the Miami Dolphins. He completed 29 of 45 passes for 327 yards and one touchdown but took seven sacks. Despite protecting the ball, his struggles under pressure have clearly made an impact on the coaching staff’s decision.

For McDaniel, this switch feels like a calculated gamble, giving the young rookie a chance to develop while keeping Wilson on standby.

As the Dolphins get ready to play in Cleveland, all these shake-ups are affecting their already tough season. With trade rumors and talk of Tyreek Hill possibly being released, the team’s future feels uncertain.

For now, though, all eyes are on Quinn Ewers, the rookie who just jumped from clipboard duty to the front line of Miami’s quarterback conversation.
