Tragedy For Ex-Yankees Phenom: Catcher Dies Way Too Soon At Just 35 Years Old
Jesus Montero, who was once a promising Yankees prospect, died at 35 after a motorcycle accident earlier this month.
A report from El Extrabase indicates that Montero was part of a serious traffic accident on October 5 and passed following several days in the hospital.
Montero’s motorcycle hit a pickup truck in Valencia, in his native Venezuela, and he reportedly suffered severe injuries to the point where he had to be put in an induced coma at Valencia City Hospital. Unfortunately, he would eventually die from those injuries.
The Yankees announced his death on Sunday.
“The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesus Montero,” the team said in a statement. “We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones.”
He suffered six broken ribs, fractures to his femur, tibia, and fibula, plus hip and knee injuries.

Unfortunately, the Yankees have already had heartbreak like this in 2025. Months ago, former star Brett Gardner’s son died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on vacation with his family.
The tragic incident occurred on March 21, 2025, at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.
More on Jesus Montero
Montero is best known for having been one of the league’s most elite prospects in the early 2010s. He was signed by the Yankees at age 16 and made it to the majors by age 21 in 2011.
However, Cashman traded him to the Seattle Mariners after the season, following just 18 games played for the Yankees. That also included him being put on the Yankees’ postseason roster, where he played in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Tigers. He went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
That would be Montero’s last appearance in a Yankees uniform.
Montero and teammate Hector Noesi were shipped to Seattle in exchange for All-Star right-hander Michael Pineda and pitching prospect Jose Campos.
Jesus Montero would never take off with the Mariners as a smacked 15 homers with a .685 OPS while splitting time at catcher and DH. The following season, he would tear his meniscus and then accept a 50-game suspension upon being implicated in the Biogenesis scandal.
The 2014 season was even worse after he showed up overweight. His career ended in 2020-2021, with his last MLB game in 2015.
