The former Duke Blue Devils standout Cooper Flagg was the most hyped player for the 2025 NBA draft. The excitement proved well-founded as the Dallas Mavericks selected him with the first overall pick in the first round of the draft.

Cooper Flagg started to dominate in the league during the preseason, playing in all four games for the Mavericks. He helped the team win three out of those four preseason games. Flagg made his regular-season debut against the San Antonio Spurs, where he stunned fans by recording 10 points, 10 rebounds, and one steal in the 125–92 loss.

Flagg’s consistently strong performances have made him a leading candidate for the Rookie of the Year award. However, recent reports indicate that a new shocking favorite is emerging for the award, who is rapidly closing the gap on Flagg.

“Closing the gap: Cooper Flagg looked like a lock for Rookie of the Year — until V.J. Edgecombe entered the conversation. He’s now up to +220, according to @PolymarketSport. Could the momentum be shifting?” Via Hoop Central.

The Philadelphia selected V.J. Edgecombe with the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. He made history by recording 34 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the Sixers’ 117–116 win against the Boston Celtics. This performance marked the highest point total for an NBA debut in Sixers franchise history and the third-highest in NBA history overall.

Star player Anthony Davis played for 38 minutes and scored 27 points, four assists, and 13 rebounds. P.J. Washington also had a notable impact on the court by recording 18 points, one assist, and nine rebounds.

Despite these efforts, the Mavericks fell short against the Wizards, losing the game with the final score of 107-117. The Mavericks faced a disappointing start of the season, losing two straight games at the start of the season. They will play their next game against the Toronto Raptors at American Airlines Center.
