The Buffalo Bills made a surprising call ahead of their game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team will sit wide receiver Keon Coleman, and the move is quite desperate. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that coaches made the call and told him it was “a coach’s decision.”

Schultz also said the decision had nothing to do with Coleman’s production. He said coaches told him, “I’m told it’s not performance-based. Coleman actually had a strong week of practice. But the team wants to see more from him in other areas.”

The timing raised eyebrows because the Bills already face questions about their depth at wide receiver.

Coleman is now in his second season with the Bills after they picked him 33rd overall in 2024. He had a solid rookie year with 29 catches, 556 yards, and four touchdowns. This season, he has 32 catches for 330 yards and three touchdowns in nine games. Only Khalil Shakir has more receiving yards among Buffalo’s receivers, as Shakir has bounced back well after his preseason injury.

Bills Shift Their Receiver Plans

The Bills are still trying to fix their wide receiver problems. They’ve played nine games, and none of their receivers have even reached 500 yards yet. Before the trade deadline, the team looked around for help. Dianna Russini of The Athletic said the Bills asked about trading for Saints receiver Chris Olave, but the Saints refused and chose to trade Rashid Shaheed instead.

Since Buffalo didn’t make a trade, the current receivers have to carry the load. Josh Allen, who was recently fined by the league, and James Cook are doing most of the work on offense, but the wideouts must improve if the Bills want a real chance at the playoffs.

Coleman was supposed to be a big part of that plan, but the team is now turning to others. The Bills promoted Gabe Davis from the practice squad and signed Mecole Hardman to the 53-man roster on Saturday. Those moves hinted that changes were coming, and Coleman ended up being left out of the game-day lineup.

His recent stats didn’t help him. After a strong Week 1 with 112 yards and a touchdown, he averaged only 27 yards per game over the next eight weeks. With Joshua Palmer healthy again, the Bills have changed their receiver rotation once more as they try to spark the offense against Tampa Bay.
