Islam Makhachev dropped his lightweight belt to go after the welterweight title at UFC 322. He’s not engaging in any warm-up fights and is going straight for the belt at 170. He has won 15 fights in a row, so he’s clearly one of the top fighters today. Beat Jack Della Maddalena, and that’s 16 straight wins, plus he’d have titles in two divisions. After that, Kamaru Usman is who he wants.

Talking to RMC Sports, Makhachev called Usman the best welterweight ever, pointing to his five title defenses as proof. In Makhachev’s eyes, the former UFC champ represents the ultimate test at 170 pounds. Beating him would cement Makhachev’s place in the division beyond just holding the belt.

He said, “Like one of the best fighters in the welterweight all the time, Kamaru Usman (would be his target to set a 17 fights winning streak) I will choose him.”

Calling out Usman makes sense for Makhachev. Even though ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ isn’t the champ anymore, his name still means a lot at welterweight. Beating him would be a bigger deal than taking on a random contender. However, he first has to get through Della Maddalena. JDM’s 18-fight streak and knockout power present real problems. Meanwhile, the Dagestani already said after vacating the belt, he wants to become champ again.

Makhachev said he wants to experience the thrill of being champion again. In his words, “I remember when I fought for the belt the first time and the emotions I had. I want to feel that again. It’s my prime time, and I don’t want to leave this sport without a second belt.”

Makhachev says he’s done with lightweight because cutting weight like that is too tough on him. He’s staying at welterweight from now on to make his mark. Getting wins over Jack Della Maddalena and Kamaru Usman would show everyone he belongs at the top of that division.
